How to Prepare Kids for a Stress-Free Family Photo Shoot.
Family photos are all about capturing those authentic, love-filled moments—giggles, hugs, and everything in between. But let’s be real—getting little ones camera-ready can sometimes feel like herding cats. Don’t worry, though! I’m here to make your family photo session as fun and stress-free as possible. Whether we’re exploring the orchards of Kelowna, running along the shores of Okanagan Lake, or picnicking in the vineyards of Summerland, I’ve got you covered.
Here are my top tips to make sure your kiddos have the best time during your Okanagan family photoshoot:
1. Timing is Everything
Kids are happiest when they’re well-rested and fed—trust me on this one! I always recommend booking your shoot during their happiest time of day (usually mid-morning or late afternoon). The softer light during these times is also perfect for those dreamy, natural photos.
If you're dreaming of a golden hour session (because hello, that Okanagan sunset glow!), we can plan around a lighter dinner or bring snacks to keep little bellies happy.
2. Keep Snacks & Water Handy
Speaking of snacks—bring them! Mess-free options like grapes, cheese cubes, or granola bars work wonders. A quick snack break can turn a frown upside down and give your little ones the boost they need.
Water bottles are a must, especially during sunny summer sessions by the lake or in the orchards.
3. Dress for Comfort (and Cuteness!)
Coordinating outfits? Yes. Matching from head-to-toe? Not necessary. Think soft, breathable fabrics in colors that complement Okanagan’s natural landscapes—earthy tones, soft pastels, or warm neutrals are all winners.
Make sure your kids are comfortable—if they’re itchy, too hot, or cold, it’ll show. And don’t stress about shoes! Barefoot beach photos at Gyro Beach or running through grassy vineyards can add that extra sprinkle of personality.
4. Let Them Be Kids
The best family photos happen when kids can be themselves. I’ll gently guide everyone into natural poses, but I’ll also step back and let your family play, explore, and interact. Whether your little one loves twirling, running, or collecting rocks, we’ll capture those moments that make your family unique.
Pro tip: Sometimes, the in-between moments—like a stolen hug or a spontaneous dance—end up being your favorites.
5. Bring a Favorite Toy or Prop
A beloved stuffed animal, a colorful kite, or even bubbles can make your kids feel more at ease and give us some sweet, playful shots. Plus, it adds a personal touch to your session.
For lakeside shoots, think sand toys or skipping stones. In the fall? A pile of leaves is basically nature’s playground.
6. Embrace Imperfection
Family life is messy, beautiful, and real—and that’s exactly what we want to capture. Don’t stress if your toddler refuses to smile on cue or your baby decides it’s snack time mid-session. I promise, the real, raw moments often make for the most heartwarming photos.
If you go into your shoot with a playful, flexible mindset, your kiddos will pick up on it, and everyone will have way more fun.
Bonus: Okanagan Family Photo Hotspots
Some of my all-time favorite spots for relaxed, family-friendly shoots include:
Mission Creek Greenway – Perfect for nature walks and riverside photos.
Bertram Creek Park – Stunning lake views and open spaces for kids to run.
Kangaroo Creek Farm – For the ultimate playful session (and kangaroo snuggles!).
Family photos shouldn’t feel like a chore—they should feel like a beautiful, love-filled adventure. So, bring the snacks, pack the bubbles, and let’s go make some magic!
